Obfuscate

Obfuscate

Type: None
Clan Favored: Mehket, Nosferatu

• Touch of Shadow
By simply passing their hand over an object, the vampire can will it to vanish even as onlookers actively perceive the item. While the item itself doesn’t actually go anywhere, the vampires mastery of this Discipline prevents the object from being noticed until the vampire decides otherwise.

Cost: None
Activation Time: Instant
Roll: Wits + Larceny + Obfuscate
Duration: One scene
Target: One object

The vampire touches an object and, with a successful activation, the object becomes undetectable to all mundane sense. Supernatural detection, such as Auspex, has a chance to locate the object provided the would-be on looker garners more successes than the Obfuscate rating or Blood Potency (whichever is higher) of the vampire in question. Targets susceptible to Touch of Shadow aren’t necessarily incapable of viewing the item so much as their consciousness just actively ignores the object and averts their body subconsciously from interacting with the object. Should the object represent a direct threat, such as a gun pointed at a target or a solid wood desk in front of a car on the highway, all onlookers are automatically able to perceive the object. Items inherently dangerous, such as a loaded weapon, can still be concealed provided they are not in active use. The number of successes needed to hide an object is equal to the size of the object in question (minimum 1). The vampire can choose to negate Touch of Shadow from any and all objects on his turn reflexively.

Unique Clan Ability
Vampires that favor Obfuscate take a die penalty on the activation roll of Touch of Shadow equal to the size of the object to attempt to hide the object reflexively. The object must be touched and the vampire can only attempt to do so on his turn.

•• Mask of Tranquility
Often the predators favored method of hunting prey is to hide amid their ranks. With this power, the vampire can easily and effectively pass as just another face in the crowd.

Cost: None
Activation Time: Reflexive
Roll: None
Duration: Indefinite
Target: Self

Mask of Tranquility has multiple effects. First and foremost, it makes the vampire appear to all senses to be a perfectly mundane human with no outstanding features. The vampire still resembles himself, but all of his exceptional qualities are suppressed including, but not limited to, his supernatural lineage or outstanding features such as striking looks. His complexion becomes normal (if not a little pale) and his body also begins behaving as a mortal body would (such as breathing and blinking).

Second, should the vampire actively hide, whether in the shadows or among the crowd of people, he adds his Obfuscate rating to the appropriate roll to avoid detection.

Finally, the vampire appears to be mundane even to supernatural senses. He does not trigger any sixth senses or stir the beats within other Kindred. All attempts to defeat Mask of Tranquility must be attempted with supernatural means and score a number of successes equal to the vampire’s Obfuscate rating or Blood Potency, whichever trait is higher.

This supernatural façade is undone if the vampire becomes hostile or performs an obviously supernatural feat (subject to Storyteller discretion). The vampire can freely suppress or reengage any benefits conferred from Mask of Tranquility as a reflexive action on his turn. Mask of Tranquility in no way inhibits the Vampire from accessing other Disciplines or any other supernatural abilities.

Unique Clan Ability
Vampires with Obfuscate as a favored clan ability take veiling the truth above and beyond the world of the physical. While Mask of Tranquility is active, the vampire may substitute his Obfuscate for the appropriate skill when attempting to keep something hidden.

••• Cloak of Night
This ability allows the vampire to become invisible to all mundane methods of detection unless the vampire intentionally calls attention to himself.

Cost: None
Activation Time: Instant
Roll: Intelligence + Stealth + Obfuscate
Duration: One scene
Target: Self

Supernatural perception can contest this ability with a contested roll as normal. If the vampire activates Cloak of Night while being observed, non-supernatural observers lose track of him through a momentarily glance to the side or a fortuitous object passing between them. Further activations in the same scene grant the target a cumulative +1 die circumstantial modifier to see the vampire in question. If the vampire rolls exceptional successes on the activation roll, any non-supernatural targets that witnessed him vanish forget he was ever present at all provided the vampire has not directly interacted with the target. The vampire cannot attempt to vanish while any supernatural creatures are actively viewing him and must break their gaze if even for a split second to activate Cloak of the Night.

Unique Clan Ability
Once per scene a vampire with Obfuscate as a clan favored ability can attempt to vanish from the sight of a supernatural target without first breaking line of sight. Doing so levies a -2 penalty to his attempt and is contested by all observing targets as normal.

•••• The Familiar Stranger
The vampire chooses a single person to impersonate becoming physically identical to them in every way. The vampire can only mimic what he’s seen with this Discipline so key features, such as covered birthmark, may yet give the vampire away should targets notice the absence of those features.

Cost: None
Activation Time: Instant
Roll: Wits + Subterfuge + Obfuscate contested reflexively by observer’s Resolve + Blood Potency
Duration: One scene
Target: Self

If the vampire garners more successes than the target, the target believes he sees the individual who best fits that description. If the target ties or exceeds the vampire’s activation successes, he becomes immune to this power for the duration of the scene. If the vampire botches the activation roll, the target is immune to The Familiar Stranger for the rest of the night. The vampire can also foil his own disguise simply by acting out of character, though the target typically does not become suspicious unless the vampire acts noticeably out of character or it is extremely improbable that the person the vampire is impersonating could not be present at that time (such as impersonating another vampire the target staked). These events are typically resolved by the vampire making a Manipulation + Subterfuge contested by the target with a roll determined by the Storyteller that is appropriate to the circumstance. The Storyteller should also feel free to leverage bonuses or penalties as appropriate to the situation. Should the vampire fail to overcome the target’s successes, the target knows the vampire isn’t who he is pretending to be but still cannot see through the disguise. Mundane senses may not penetrate this disguise but supernatural senses can contest it, pitting the activation roll of this ability against the successes garnered by the supernatural observer.

Unique Clan Ability
The vampire gains the 9 again quality on his activation roll and adds his Obfuscate to any die rolls made to convince the target he is who he’s pretending to masquerade as.

••••• Cloak the Gathering
Cost: None
Activation Time: Instant
Roll: Intelligence + Stealth + Obfuscate contested reflexively by observer’s Resolve + Blood Potency
Duration: One scene
Target: Self and up to Obfuscate or Blood Potency (whichever is higher) other willing targets

This ability functions as Cloak of Night save that it can be activated for additional willing participants. The vampire contests all supernatural means of perceiving those affected and any benefactor that intentionally draws attention to himself ends the benefits provided by Cloak the Gathering. Cloak the Gathering cannot be attempted if a supernatural creature actively perceives even one targeted ally. The targets must remain within a number of yards equal to the Obfuscate rating of the vampire activating Cloak the Gathering and should even one ally draw attention to themselves all are revealed. Should an ally move outside the range of Cloak the Gathering, the remaining allies (and the activating vampire) are still hidden.

Unique Clan Ability
A vampire that has Obfuscate as a unique clan ability can instead cloak all targets within a number of yards equal to his Obfuscate rating, centered on himself.
