Auspex

Type: Clan Discipline
Clan Favored: Mehket

Auspex is the measure of the vampire’s awareness to his surroundings. Vampires that master Auspex awaken their senses to a world beyond the grasp of the mortal coil.

• Heightened Senses
Heightened Senses is the fabled ability of vampiric legends which allows vampire to enhance their senses to supernatural means. This ability allows the vampire to add his Auspex rating to all rolls that involve any of his senses. The vampires senses automatically adjust to external stimuli which prevents the vampire from experiencing sensory overload when focusing on one particular sense. At their leisure, vampires may end the effects of Heightened Senses for any or all senses reflexively at any time.

Cost: None
Activation: Reflexive
Activation Roll: None
Duration: Indefinite
Target: Self

Unique Clan Ability
Vampires of Clans and Bloodlines that favor this discipline can also activate a supernatural sensory ability when they activate Auspex for the scene. Examples include night vision, infravision, the ability to see ultraviolet light, and the ability to hear in frequencies well beyond the range of mortal ears. Like Heightened Senses, the vampire retains complete control and can seamlessly blend the special sense with his normal senses. The vampire need only have a basic working knowledge of a special sense in order to activate it in conjunction with Heightened Senses but each special sense must be approved by the Storyteller. The vampire cannot perceive ethereal supernatural effects, such as a spirit across the gauntlet or an ongoing spell, with Heightened Senses.

•• Aura Perception
The vampire gains the ability to see into the supernal with the application of this Discipline.

Cost: None
Activation: Reflexive
Activation Roll: None
Duration: Indefinite
Target: Self

The vampire can perceive the emotions of any being he can see. Further, the vampire can determine the nature of the being (if supernatural) and intuitively understand basic function of any supernatural effects currently active on the target. If the target is attempting to obscure any of the above, the vampire rolls a contested Intelligence + Empathy + Auspex to see the truth. All creatures can hide their emotions, natures and ongoing supernatural effects. Active resistance is done with the character’s Wits/Resolve + Subterfuge/Stealth as a contested, reflexive action. If the target wishes to contest the vampire’s use of this ability, the target does so when the vampire first perceives the target and only contests this ability once per scene. Otherwise, each application of a supernatural ability is contested at time of activation. At the beginning of the scene, all applicable targets make one roll and compare the results accordingly with ties favoring the target’s anonymity.

Unique Clan Ability
Vampires that favor the Auspex discipline gain the 9 again quality on all contested rolls to use Aura Perception.

••• The Spirit’s Touch
By simply making contact with an object, the vampire communes with the spirit of an object and gains an intuitive understanding.

Cost: 1 Willpower
Activation: Instant
Activation Roll: None (see text)
Duration: One turn (see text)
Target: One Object

First, the vampire instinctively knows the structure and durability of the object. If the vampire was unsure about the intended function of the object, the vampire instinctively becomes aware of it and how the item is intended to be used. This does not grant the vampire any additional skill in using the object, he merely understands its function. Further, by communing with the spirit of the object, the vampire can ask the spirit one question per scene. The spirit then grants the vampire a vision of a scene that would best answer the vampire’s question from its own perspective. The vampire may only ask one question per scene and receiving the vision from an object takes an entire turn, during which the vampire cannot take any actions and is completely unaware of his surroundings. The spirit cannot grant visions if the object was not present, which means if the vampire asks the question the spirit had no involvement in it merely gives the vampire no vision when asked. The vision in response to the question the vampire asks is chosen by the spirit (and, ultimately, the Storyteller) which it believes will best assist the vampire. The vampire may ask the same question multiple times to allow the spirit to show multiple visions. The spirit will not relate the same vision to the same vampire twice (even if more successes are gathered on the second asking) and it will simply not grant the vampire a vision at all when it has nothing further to share. The vampire rolls a Wits + Occult + Auspex, with the outcome determining the detail of the vision.

Botch: The spirit is offended by the vampire’s demands and grants the vampire a false vision with faulty information. The spirit is will not answer any questions for the vampire until the following night.
Failure: The spirit does not grant the vampire a vision and the vampire cannot attempt to ask another question until the following scene.
Success: Once success grants the vampire brief flashes of an event which grants a few keen insights into his question. The more successes gained, the clearer the vision and the more insights the vampire gains.
Extraordinary Successes: The spirit recalls a relevant event in great detail and provides the vampire a crystal clear vision of everything that happened.

Unique Clan Ability
Vampires that favor the Auspex discipline gain the 9 again quality on rolls to devise a vision from the spirit of an item. Further, they may also ask a follow up question (and make another roll subsequently) at no additional willpower cost related to the first after receiving a vision from a spirit without having to wait for a scene to lapse.

•••• Telepathy
Upon reaching this level of Auspex mastery, the vampire gains the ability to reach out with his mind to communicate with other creatures.

Cost: 1 Willpower
Activation: Reflexive
Activation Roll: None (see text)
Duration: One scene
Target: Self and others (see text)

When Telepathy is activated for the scene, the vampire gains the ability do anything telepathically he could do verbally which transcends language barriers and other inhibiting factors, such as a target being deaf or the inability to speak. Further, the vampire can pull or transfer memories to another target using only his mind. Verbal communication takes place at the same speed as speaking while transferring images/scenes happens in real time. The vampire may maintain a number of simultaneous Telepathic connections equal to his Blood Potency. For every dot of Auspex the vampire has above 4, he can communicate information telepathically twice as fast. As a reminder, multiplies are additive which means a vampire with an Auspex of six can communicate information three times as fast while a vampire with an Auspex of seven can communicate information four times as fast. The vampire can choose to discontinue Telepathy with any or all targets reflexively on her turn.

This ability functions without the need for an activation roll if the intended target is within line of sight and willing. The vampire may reflexively roll Intelligence + Occult + Auspex to reach out to a single target not within line of sight once per turn. One success grants the vampire a range of 1 mile with each additional success multiplying the range by 10 (2 successes is 10 miles, 3 successes 100 miles, 4 successes 1,000 miles, etc). This roll (with corresponding ranges) is also made reflexively should the target leave the vampire’s line of sight to determine how far away the vampire can still communicate with the target.

Regardless of the distance, any unwilling target opposes the vampire’s Intelligence + Socialize + Auspex roll with a reflexive Wits/Resolve + Socialize/Stealth + Blood Potency roll. If the vampire fails to accumulate more successes than the target, the target becomes immune to the vampire’s telepathy until the vampire once more establishes line of sight in the presence of the target (as long as the target remains unwilling) or until the following night, whichever time period is longer. Each time the vampire attempts to pull information from the target (each attempt represents roughly a scene worth of information) the target is entitled to another reflexive contested roll.

Unique Clan Ability
A vampire that favors the Auspex discipline may share one or more senses of any target she has an established Telepathic connection to. Each time she does so the vampire must make a Wits + Composure + Auspex with a difficulty equal to the number of shared senses she is experiencing. Failure to meet this difficulty imposes a -1 penalty for each success she failed to accumulate. The vampire may change which senses she is experiencing reflexively on her turn.

••••• Twilight Projection
The ultimate manifestation of Auspex, the vampire gains the ability to project himself as a spirit by separating his consciousness from his body.

Cost: 1 Willpower
Activation: Instant
Activation Roll: None
Duration: Indefinite
Target: Self

The spirit form of the vampire physically resembles his real body. To determine his traits as a spirit, the vampire uses the highest corresponding trait of his Attributes. For example, a vampire with an Intelligence 3, Strength 4 and Presence 2 would have a 4 Power. The vampire has no Essence and cannot use Numina or inherent spirit traits as a result, though he can manifest himself for the expenditure of one willpower per scene. This allows the vampire to be seen by and interact with corporeal beings. Otherwise the vampire may be interacted with by creatures that cross the gauntlet as normal for incorporeal spirits. Use the vampire’s Size and Species speed bonus when determining his spirit traits. Further, the vampire has no Ban while in spirit form but may be blocked by wards against spirits normally. Vampires may only use Disciplines that do not require Vitae to activate while in this form. Just as the vampire’s spirit form rises from his body on activation, the vampire’s spirit must travel back to his body and lay down within it for the vampire to meld his consciousness back into his body. The vampire’s body is considered to be in torpor while this Discipline is active. If the vampire’s spirit form is destroyed, his consciousness instantly snaps back to his body regardless of the distance. Doing so causes the vampire to lose all remaining willpower. Otherwise the vampire may expend a single willpower to instantly return to his body regardless of distance. The vampire also becomes instantly aware of any health levels of damage his body suffers while Twilight Projection is active.

Unique Clan Ability
When transforming into spirit form, the vampire may use his rating in Auspex if higher for any of his spirit Attributes.
